New outcomes models (program logics) put up on outcomesmodels.org October 17, 2007

We’ve just put a number of new outcomes models (program logics) up on the outcomesmodels.org site. We’re planning to continue adding to the outcomes model collection at outcomesmodels.org for two reasons. The first is to give examples of how models can be drawn in DoView. The more examples people see, the easier they find it becomes to build DoView models. The second is to allow people to grab either the whole of one of these models or just some of the slices from one or more models to use as a start in building their own models. DoView’s unique modular approach using multiple diagram slices makes it very easy to do this.
The new models we’ve put up so far in October 2007 are Cyou need DoView installed on your computer to view the DoView file but anyone can see the PDF version).
Community Development Program Outcomes Model (DoView file) (PDF). Community level, individual level and well run project slices for a general community development program.
Crop Improvement Rural Development Project Outcomes Model (DoView file) (PDF). Crop improvement and well run project slices for a rural development project to improve crops grown, distribution and marketing.
Raising Pre-school Children Outcomes Model (DoView file) (PDF). Single slice model for raising pre-school children.
Regional Economic Development Grants and Skills Outcomes Model (DoView file) (PDF). High-level, skills development and effective regional economic grants program slices for a regional economic development program providing assistance to industry and promoting skill development by local educational institutions.
School Student With Learning Difficulties Outcomes Model (DoView file) (PDF). Student level and system level slices for identifying and assisting school students with learning difficulties. Acknowledgment: Specific Learning Disabilities Federation.
Skills and Knowledge Training Program Outcomes Model (DoView file) (PDF). A general single slice for any type of skills or knowledge training.
Well Functioning Organization, Project or Program Outcomes Model (DoView) (PDF). General single slice model for what is needed for a well functioning organization, project or program.
We’ve many more outcomes models which we’re preparing for posting on the outcomesmodels.org web site. We hope that in time others will want to send us their DoView models so we can make them generic and put them up on this site for others to use. Models posted on the site are covered by a Creative Commons copyright license, so that while others can use them, they need to acknowledge the original models. People who have models they want us to put up should use the Contact form on the Contact page on the outcomesmodels.org site to get in touch with us.
Ourselves and others are now starting to build a lot of DoView outcomes models (program logics) across a range of sectors. As we do this, we’re finding that something that we suspected would happen when we designed DoView is emerging. This is that in using DoView’s modular approach (diving a model into slices), a set of standard types of slices is starting to emerge as useful in a wide range of programs.
These are the slices I identified in an earlier post - national, locality, organizational/institutional, individual and one or more ‘mechanisms’ slices. This is exciting because it means that instead of staring at a blank piece of paper when you sit down to start drawing an outcomes model or program logic, you can be thinking about whether some of the standard slices we’ve indentified so far can form the basis for the new model you are going to draw. Obviously, you need to tailor the slices to whatever topic you’re modeling, but being able to quickly grab a slice from another model from outcomesmodels.org or from your own, or colleagues, earlier DoView modeling makes the process much more efficient.
We’ve just about finished creating a free update to DoView which will make it much easier to move multiple slices between DoView files (at the moment you can only move one slice at a time - see Slices, Copying between models in DoView Help to find out how to do it in Version 1.02, the current version of DoView). This update will be out by the end of November 2007. If you want to subscribe to receive DoView update information, and have not yet done so, just go to the Resources page of the DoView site and enter your email address.
